Robert M. Gray, Jr. (Bob) formerly of Nanuet, NY and Palm Coast, FL., peacefully passed away on May 23, 2020 in Totowa, NJ at the age of 95. Private services and interment were held. A Mass celebrating his faith and his life will be announced when it is safe for all to gather.
Born in Yonkers, NY on March 28, 1925, Bob lived in Nanuet from 1960 prior to moving to Palm Coast in 1995 and then Totowa, NJ in 2010.
He served in the US Navy amphibious force aboard the USS LSM 10 in the Pacific Theater from August 1943 to March 1946 as the ship radioman in the battles of Luzon and Okinawa.
Bob graduated from Gorton HS ('43), then earned his BA from Manhattan College ('50) after the war. He also attended New York University Graduate School studying for a Masters in taxation. He earned his CPA while working for the firm of Malone & Janelli in the Bronx where he attained partnership. He then founded Robert Gray & Co. in 1970 in Pearl River, NY and retired from management in 1990.
Bob was active in his community. He served as President of the Holy Name Society, Secretary of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Parish Council member, and Eucharistic Minister at his beloved St. Anthony's Parish. As a longtime member of the Nanuet Rotary Club (proudly with perfect attendance), he served as Club President in 1975 and founding member and Chairman of its Scholarship Foundation. His longtime involvement with youth sports included serving as Treasurer of the Nanuet Little League, Manager of the undefeated '72 Tigers, and Manager for Nanuet West Nyack Babe Ruth League and Girls Softball League.
Aside from his love of his family, his country, and his faith, Bob loved all sports. He was an avid golfer. He also took equal pleasure from attending sporting events. Whether it was his favorite pro team or one of his grandchildren's games, Bob's presence as a fan was known by all.
In 1952, Bob married the love of his life Mary (Lenihan) "Molly" Gray who predeceased him in 1989. Bob met Molly walking by her front stoop in Yonkers where she lived after emigrating from County Mayo, Ireland.
He is also predeceased by his sister Margaret (Collins) and brother John Marshall "Mishie" Gray, a Purple Heart recipient who was killed in action as an infantryman with the 22nd Infantry, 4th Division in Normandy on June 14, 1944. Bob's visit to his brother's gravesite at the Normandy American Cemetery in 1988 was a very special experience for him. He is also predeceased by his son-in-law Jack Bishop in 2014.
