Richard A. Burd

–

Caldwell, New Jersey

Richard Burd, 83, passed away peacefully in Livingston, NJ on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Born and raised in Califon, Mr. Burd lived in Verona for over 50 years.

He started his career as an Auto Mechanic before becoming an independent landscaper. Rich took pride in his work and later dedicated himself to serving the community in his retirement. For the past ten years, he worked for the Township of Verona, overseeing and monitoring the town’s recycling program. A familiar and friendly face at the Verona Recycling Center, he ensured operations ran smoothly and never hesitated to assist others—especially fellow senior citizens—by carrying their recycling to the appropriate areas. Despite his own health challenges, he remained steadfast in his commitment to helping others and always maintained his quick wit and sense of humor.

Rich faced hardships in his early years, but through resilience and determination, he built a life defined by hard work, kindness, and generosity. He had a deep appreciation for simple joys—whether it was a good day of fishing, lending a hand to a neighbor, or sharing a laugh with friends.

An avid fisherman, Rich found joy in passing along his love for the sport to his children and grandchildren. He especially cherished his time fishing with his grandson, Steven, who was his pride and joy. One of his proudest moments was when Steven joined the U.S. Coast Guard and is serving on a National Security Cutter.

Rich also had a passion for travel. He shared many adventures with his former wife and best friend, the late Judith Burd, as their bond of love and mutual respect endured. Together, they made countless memories exploring destinations such as Alaska and Canada. He also enjoyed trips to any Casino.

He was predeceased by his former wife, Judith A. Burd, and his brother, Cecil Burd, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters, Maria Burd, Rita Burrows (Tracy), Nancy Timmons (Gary); close friend, Frank Klosowski, Jr.; and his grandchildren, Steven Timmons, Michael Scott, Brittany Scott and Nicole Scott.

Visiting will be held at Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave, Verona, on Friday, February 7 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a service at 6:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Verona Rescue Squad, 12 Church Street, Verona, NJ 07044 (veronars.org) would be greatly appreciated.
