Sr. Maura Campbell, O.P. died on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the St. Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell. She was 99. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Convent Chapel, 7 Ryerson Avenue (Mt. St. Dominic), Caldwell on Wednesday, February 2 at 11 AM. Visiting in St. Catherine Convent on Tuesday, February 1 from 1 to 6 PM. Born in Bayonne, Sr. Maura entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell on September 8, 1927 and professed vows September 18, 1929. Sister has a BS in Education/English from Seton Hall University, a MA in English from Seton Hall University, a MA in Theology from Providence College, a PhD in Theology from St. Mary's Notre Dame, and an honorary PhD in Religious Studies from Providence College. She pursued postgraduate studies in Moral Theology at Catholic University, Theology/Social Doctrines at Marquette University, and Theology of Communications at St. Paul's University at Ottawa (Canada). Sr. Maura taught elementary grades at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Boonton and Mt. St. Dominic Grade School in Caldwell; high school grades at St. Dominic Academy in Jersey City; and Theology/Scripture and Philosophy at Caldwell College. She was also Professor Emeritus at Caldwell College since 1989. Sr. Maura served as Director of Postulants; Director of Scholastics; Chairperson of the Religious Studies Department at Caldwell College; and Assistant to the Dean of Caldwell College. Since 1976 she served as permanent representative at the United Nations for the International Catholic Education Office; was a member of the United Nations Committee on Aging and Committee on Disarmament; and served as delegate to numerous conferences for OIEC in Thailand, the Philippines, Egypt, Kenya, Spain, Italy, England, India, Peru, Ecuador, and Belgium. Sister was a member of the Editorial Board of The Catholic Advocate (Newark), Executive Board of the United Nations Department of Public Information; American Academy of History; Catholic Historical Society; Ecumenical/Interfaith Commission - Pastoral Council (Newark); Theta Alpha Kappa (life member); College Theology Society; Catholic Theological Society of America; American Academy of Religion; Dominican Educational Society; Who's Who in the East; Women's Leadership Conference; Sisters Assembly- Archdiocese of Newark; and the Lumen Center Advisory Board. She served as Roman Catholic representative for the World Council of Religion; Chairman of the World Concerns Committee; President of the Board of Directors of the International Catholic Organization at the UN; President of the Dominican Educational Association; and President of the Faculty Council at Caldwell College. Among her many accolades Sr. Maura received a Doctorate in Humane Letters (Honorary) from Caldwell College, Ambassador for Peace Award (Women's Federation for Peace), Fidelity to the Mission of OIEC Award, Caldwell College Cup, Soroptimist International Woman of Distinction Award, CIO Award for Service at the UN, Caldwell College Veritas Award, Who's Who of Women in the World, US, East and Religion, State of New Jersey Faculty Recognition Program Honored for Outstanding Achievement in Higher Education, Theta Alpha Kappa Religious Studies Honor Society for Outstanding Service, Award for Unique Service Beyond the Campus (Caldwell College), Directory of American Scholars of Religion, and the Faculty Award for the 40th Caldwell College Anniversary. Sr. Maura is survived by nieces Patricia Campbell and Colleen Campbell and nephews George Campbell, Thomas Campbell, Roger Campbell, and John Mulewski as well as many Grand-nieces and Grand-nephews.
