Sr. Barbara A. Cowan, OP Obituary (1943 - 2011)

Sr. Barbara Cowan, O.P. died on Saturday, July 23, 2011 in St. Catherine Health Care Center, Caldwell. She was 68. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine of Siena Convent Chapel, 7 Ryerson Avenue (Mt. St. Dominic) Caldwell on Tuesday, July 26 at 11AM. Visiting at St. Catherine Convent, Caldwell on Monday 4 to 7 PM. Sister Barbara was born in Jersey City and entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell on September 8, 1963 and professed vows on July 3, 1965. Sister graduated from St. Dominic Academy in Jersey City, Caldwell College with a degree in Chemistry and from Seton Hall University with a Masters in Education. She taught Elementary School at St. Catherine of Siena School in Cedar Grove and the Ascension School in New Milford, taught high school Chemistry, Physics & Algebra at Mt. St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell and Lacordaire Academy in Upper Montclair, served as Dean of Students and Director of the External Degree Program at Caldwell College, served as Assistant Principal at Mt. St. Dominic Academy, Dean of Students at Lacordaire Academy, Bursar and Superior at St. John's Convent in Caldwell, and Novice Director for the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell. Sr. Barbara is survived by her siaters, Kathleen Cowan and Claire Cowan. Memorial donations to the Sisters of St. Dominic, One Ryerson Avenue, Caldwell NJ 07006 would be appreciated.
