Sr. Emma Patricia Murphy, O.P. Obituary (1923

Sr. Emma Patricia Murphy, OP, a member of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell for 70 years died peacefully at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, NJ on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the age of 96. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine of Siena Convent Chapel, 7 Ryerson Avenue, (Mt. St. Dominic) Caldwell on Saturday, June 8 at 10:30 am. Visiting will be in St. Catherine of Siena Convent on Friday, June 7 from 2 to 7 pm. Office for the Dead will be prayed on Friday, June 7 at 4:00 pm in St. Catherine of Siena Convent Chapel. For those she came in contact with, Sr. Emma Patricia exemplified kindness, simplicity of life and unending gratitude learned from the two most influential people in her life, her parents, Patrick and Emma (Brennan) Murphy. Sister entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell on February 2, 1949, received the Dominican habit on September 7, 1949, made first profession on September 8, 1950, and final profession on September 8, 1956. Sister earned her BS in Social Studies and Elementary Education from Caldwell University and was certified as an elementary school teacher. Sr. Emma Patricia was a devoted teacher to children at Lacordaire Academy, in Upper Montclair, St. Mary in Wharton, St. Catherine in Mobile, Alabama, Assumption School in Lawrence, Massachusetts and Mount Saint Dominic Academy Grade School, in Caldwell. A skilled administrator, Sister also served as principal at St. Peter the Apostle in Parsippany. Following her twenty-seven years as an educator, Sister served as receptionist at Marian Manor in Caldwell and secretary at Mount Saint Dominic Academy and Lacordaire Academy. She served her sisters at St. Catherine Infirmary and was also Director of Scholastics for the Sisters of Saint Dominic. Sister Emma Patricia made a difference in the lives of countless children and adults in her various ministries. Although soft-spoken and gentle, the strength of her convictions was clear and steadfast. She exemplified the Gospel message to love one another as God loved her. Sister was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Emma and is survived by her loving Sisters of St. Dominic, dear friend Kathleen Stewart and family and members of the Kinchellagh, Dwyer, Dixon and Rigby families. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Sisters of St. Dominic, One Ryerson Avenue, Caldwell, NJ 07006 would be appreciated.
