Sr. Doris Ann Bowles, O.P. Obituary (1922

Sr. Doris Ann Bowles, OP, 97, died on Friday, November 1, 2019, in St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, NJ. A voice of wisdom and a caring presence to all, Sr. Doris Ann served her God and the Sisters of Saint Dominic faithfully for 79 years. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine of Siena Convent Chapel, 7 Ryerson Avenue, (Mt. St. Dominic) Caldwell on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 10:30 am. Visiting will be in St. Catherine of Siena Convent on Tuesday from 2 to 7 pm. Office for the Dead will be prayed on Tuesday at 4:00 pm in St. Catherine of Siena Convent Chapel. Born in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sr. Doris Ann first learned of God's love for her from her parents, James and Phoebe Bowles. She entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell on August 30, 1940, received the Dominican habit on August 23, 1941, made first profession on August 24, 1942, and final profession on August 24, 1948. Sister earned her BA in English and Education from Caldwell University, her MA in Speech and Drama from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC and pursued doctoral studies in Educational Administration from New York University, New Yor Sister Doris Ann was a devoted educator at St. Michael, Union, Blessed Sacrament, Bridgeport, CT, St. Dominic Academy, Jersey City, St. Mary High School, Rutherford, Mount Saint Dominic Academy, Caldwell, and Union Catholic High School, Scotch Plains. A skilled administrator, Sr. Doris Ann also served as Principal at Mount Saint Dominic Academy and Union Catholic High School. Sister's ministry in the educational field included service to the Archdiocese of Newark as Superintendent of Schools. She was Director of Operations at the New Community Corporation, Newark and Director of Marketing at Siena Village, Wayne. Throughout her life, Sr. Doris Ann nurtured, encouraged, supported, and gave hope to so many as she reflected the unconditional love of God that she knew first hand in her life. Sr. Doris Ann was predeceased by her parents, James and Phoebe and her siblings, Jessica Bowles, Molly Bowles, Sr. Kevin Bowles, OSB and George Bowles. Sister is survived by her loving Sisters of St. Dominic. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Sisters of St. Dominic, One Ryerson Avenue, Caldwell, NJ 07006 would be appreciated.
