Lillian W. Ashenfelter, age 94, a long-time resident of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, died on December 11, 2018.

Lillian was born on March 6, 1924 in Pottstown, PA and raised on an orchard farm in Collegeville, PA. She graduated from Collegeville-Trapp High School in 1941 and Ursinus College in 1945.

She married her husband, Horace Ashenfelter, III, on June 25, 1945 and was married for 73 years until his death on January 6, 2018. Lillian raised four (4) sons in Glen Ridge, NJ. She was a teacher in the Glen Ridge system for 25 years serving as a science and math teacher in the Middle School and High School. She was known as a disciplinarian and taught math the old fashioned way to a generation of students. During her career she continued her education and received a Master's in Education from Montclair State University.

Lillian was active in the community and was a member and officer of the Glen Ridge Women's Association, the Civic Conference Committee, the South End Committee and was the long-term Treasurer of the Glen Ridge Welfare Committee. She was an active member of the 18-holer group at the Glen Ridge Country Club and enjoyed many years as an active bridge partner with the ladies at the Club. Lillian and Horace were devoted to all things "Penn State", and they served on numerous Penn State Alumni Boards in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The indoor track at Penn State was dedicated as the "Ashenfelter Indoor Track" in 1990 in recognition of their contributions of time and resources to Penn State. Lillian and Horace were football season ticket holders, and enjoyed attending games and tailgating with family and friends.

Lillian and Horace spent many of their retirement years in Stuart, FL where they entertained their many children and grandchildren. They were willing to "drop everything" whenever there was a need for babysitting or just seeing their family. Lillian was a voracious reader and known for finishing off the NY Times Sunday crossword in a day. She will be remembered for her amazing mind and memory, her ability to recall and tell stories and her loving devotion to her husband and family.

Lillian is survived by her sons, Horace (Helen) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, James (Kathleen) of Glen Ridge, NJ, Alan T. (Susan) of Needham, Massachusetts and John (Helen) of Chatham, NJ, twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
