Pompton Plains, New Jersey
Leslie Alan Cambey died at the age of 90 on April 4, 2025 in Pompton Plains, NJ.
Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Alan was the first in his family to attend college and received his PhD in Physics from the University of New South Wales. He married Margo West in December 1956. Their first child Susan soon came along. In 1960 they left Australia for Canada where Alan pursued a postdoc at McMaster University. The family grew, with the addition of Diane and Lois.
Margo and Alan moved to State College, PA in 1962 where Blake was born, their first boy. The family lived in Arcadia, CA before settling in Pearl River, NY, where they lived for 51 years.
Alan was devoted to his career, working at Materials Research Corporation (MRC) eventually becoming President. He served on the Board of Nyack Hospital in the 1980s. In 1986 Alan and his daughter Diane cofounded Cambey & West, a Circulation Fulfillment company in Congers, NY. He retired in 2014 at the age of 80.
Alan approached life with gusto. He became a runner in his younger years. His insatiable curiosity for the world led him to explore far away places including Tibet, Iran, Russia and many places in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. He enjoyed fine dining and not so fine dining, including a weekly hotdog on 9W, and was always curious to discover new cuisines. Alan’s other passion was his family, organizing many reunions for his far-flung relatives, which included hot air balloon rides, Broadway shows and of course, fine dining.
Despite an outward sternness, his generosity to those around him, family and beyond, was remarkable and he will be remembered by many for the impact he had.
Alan is survived by his wife, Margo, his beloved children and spouses, Susan and Bernard Korotkin, Diane and Alfredo Cuellar, Lois and Pascal Brunet, Blake and Christine Cambey; 12 grandchildren, Danilo, Jasmine, Olivia, Ian, Gabriel, Nicholas, Lauren, Muriel, Sarah, Colette, Declan and Ezekiel and 9 great grandchildren.
Services in his honor will be held on Wednesday April 9th at 11:30 am in the Chapel of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Sleepy Hollow, NY, followed by the Burial in the Riverview Natural Burial Section overlooking the Pocantico River.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name to the ACLU would be greatly appreciated.
