James Sloan

James J. Sloan, 87, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026.

James was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Irene (nee King) Sloan and his siblings, Howard, Dutch, Oscar, Elmer, Pearl and Hazel.

Born in Whiting NJ, James grew up in Lakehurst and Whiting before moving to Caldwell and Verona to raise his family. He began his work career early in his life assisting his family in whatever was needed. He became a heavy equipment operator in his adult years. He worked for 36 years with the Department of Public Works for the Borough of Caldwell and loved the town he served.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 97 in Newark and the Church of The Holy Spirit in Verona.

He loved hunting, refinishing furniture and the beach. He prized his family most of all and spending time with them on LBI and at family gatherings.

He was the beloved husband of Arlene (nee Kras) for 67 years; devoted father of James P. Sloan (Elizabeth) and Debra J. Sloan; grandfather of Christian J. Sloan and Shaun J. Sloan.
