Bloomfield, New Jersey
Mr. Hui Yun (John) Wu, 86, of Bloomfield, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Shanghai, China, as the seventh of twelve children, Hui Yun lived a life marked by perseverance, curiosity, and devotion to family. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Yin Huo Wu, and their two children (Te and Tina) and their respective spouses (Christine and David), and four grandchildren (Estee, Lillian, Brooke, and Kira).
In 1980, Hui Yun immigrated with his family to the United States from China in pursuit of the American dream. A man of great intellect and discipline, he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at TongJi University in Shanghai at night while he worked as a machinist during the day. Early in his career, he worked as a mathematics teacher, machinist, technical translator of Japanese and Russian, and mechanical engineer. His remarkable adaptability and relentless work ethic defined his life’s journey.
A consummate and lifelong learner, Hui Yun was a self-taught craftsman and “jack of all trades”—a master carpenter, electrician, plumber, business owner, and computer programmer. He founded and operated New Decade Construction Company in Tribeca, New York, where he became known for his integrity, skill, and generous spirit. His work even appeared in the Architectural Digest in the mid-1990s. Through his dedication, he earned the trust and respect of the community, successfully completing numerous public and private projects.
In his later years, Hui Yun continued to approach life with energy and curiosity. He traveled the world, enjoyed long walks with his cherished dogs, Brandy and later Harry, treasured family reunions, and built a successful import business. He even created his own website, installed a commerce engine, and became his own webmaster.
Known affectionately as “Yeye” to his grandchildren, Hui Yun’s life was filled with joy, hope, and determination. Until his final days, he faced every challenge with courage and grace. His legacy of love, hard work, and wisdom will continue to inspire all who knew him.
