Mr. Gerard J. O’Connor, Jr. died on June 2, 2026, in Ocean County, New Jersey. He was 71 years old.
Visiting will be held at the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona, on Saturday, June 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Born and raised in Newark, Jerry spent 25 years in Verona where he raised his children and fostered lasting friendships in the community before settling in Manahawkin to enjoy his retirement years.
He graduated from Essex Catholic High School in 1972 and earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from William Paterson University.
Jerry had a distinguished 25-year career with the Newark Police Department, retiring as a Captain in 2000. In addition to his law enforcement career, he proudly served in the New Jersey Army National Guard, attaining the rank of Captain and serving as a Company Commander. He was deeply proud of both his military and law enforcement service and of the opportunity to help others throughout his life. Law enforcement was more than a profession to Jerry—it was a family tradition. Following in the footsteps of his father and serving alongside his brother, both members of the Newark Police Department, he dedicated his life to public service. Even after retirement, he continued to give back through his work as a counselor with the Cop 2 Cop program, supporting fellow officers and their families during difficult times.
Away from his professional life, Jerry found his greatest joy with family and friends. He loved spending time on the waters of Manahawkin Bay, where countless memories were made aboard his boat. Known for his quick wit and unforgettable sense of humor, Jerry appreciated classic Saturday Night Live comedy and never missed an opportunity to deliver a well-timed “dad joke.” He enjoyed bringing people together and was happiest when hosting family and friends at his home, serving his famous linguine and clams, sharing stories, and filling the room with laughter. His generosity, humor, and ability to make others feel welcome left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He was predeceased by his father, Gerard J. O’Connor, Sr.
He is survived by his children, Anthony G. O’Connor (Sara) and Christine Greenberg (Grant); his mother, Bernardine O’Connor; his four brothers and two sisters; and his beloved grandchildren, Ryan O’Connor, Ellie O’Connor, and Chase Greenberg.
Jerry will be remembered for his service, leadership, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, fellow officers, and soldiers.
Jerry was also a proud member of several organizations throughout his life, including the Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.), Police Benevolent Association (P.B.A.), Superior Officers' Association (S.O.A.), and Moose Lodge 1575 (Manahawkin).
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry’s memory may be made to Verona PBA Local 72, P.O. Box 72, Verona, NJ 07044.
