Ethel E. Carswell

Ms. Ethel Elizabeth Carswell died on April 13, 2023, at University Hospital in Newark. She was 71 years old.

A small private viewing and short service will be held at the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 5 to 7 pm.

Ethel was born and raised in Twin City, GA, and she lived in West Palm Beach, Florida for a short time, before returning to Newark, NJ where she lived for the last 38 years.

Ethel was a conscientious and hardworking woman, and she retired from the Temple B'nai Abraham in Livingston, where she worked as a custodian for over 11 years. As a beloved member of the school faculty, her retirement was greatly celebrated by the school's children. During her retirement years, Ethel often displayed her humor and quick wit while interacting with her relatives and friends. She often spoke of her love for her three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Although, she was a devout member of the Jesus Christ is Lord, The Universal Church in Newark; she ensured that she played her lottery numbers and scratch offs on a daily basis.

Ethel was preceded in death by her sons, Ricky Carswell and Anthony Carswell; her parents, Ruth & Willie Carswell; and her brother, Floyd Carswell.

She is survived by her children: James Hemphill, Artenkah Carswell and Veronica Hemphill; many grandchildren, including Isiah Hemphill, Shawn Woods, Stevion Walker, Chamia Mobley, Demi Sparks, Altariq Gilliard, Daron Mobley, Kay-Ree Hemphill, Abdul White, Semajah Hemphill; her siblings, Willie Carswell and Mary Carswell; and over ten great grandchildren.
