Born in Newark, Mr. Berdela grew up in Bloomfield and lived in West Caldwell since 1952.
He served his country both as a U.S. Navy pilot and then in the Merchant Marine during and post WWII.
He then went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and a Master of Business Administration degree from Stevens Institute. He was Vice President in Marketing for Automatic Switch Company in Florham Park, where he worked for over 40 years. He was well known and widely respected in his field. He was President of his trade association and pioneered the use of advanced analytics.
"Eddie," as he was known to his wife, was a devoted husband to his bride, Betty for over 69 years of marriage. February 16th will be their 70th wedding anniversary. The love they had for each other was an inspiration to all. While his family will miss being able to celebrate that day with them, they know that the two of them are now reunited, dancing together once again.
He was also a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He treasured the time spent with his family at numerous gatherings, various trips, and summers spent together each year on Chadwick Beach Island. He also took great pleasure in attending every sports game, dance recital and graduation that he could. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his pride and joy!
Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty (nee Piche) Berdela and his son, Paul Berdela.
He is survived by his loving children, Glenn Berdela (Joan), Jim Berdela (Patricia) and Susan Sahler (Brad); cherished grandchildren, Lacey Astrella (Christopher), Glenn Berdela, Jr.(Julia), Michael Berdela, Christina Kamin (Jason), Michele Thibodeau (Mark), Sara Berdela (Fiance, Michael Palantone), Brandon Sahler and Sabrina Sahler; and great-grandchildren, Mia and Deacon Berdela, Adaline and Emilia Kamin, Katherine and Nathan James Thibodeau, and Claire Astrella.
In his memory, donations to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, http://giftfunds.stjude.org/EdBerdela, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be greatly appreciated.
