With profound sadness, but hearts full of gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the life of Carmen “Mama” Zavaleta, who peacefully entered eternal rest in Livingston, New Jersey, on July 4, 2026, just one day before her 95th birthday.
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Carmen was a woman of remarkable strength, grace, and unwavering dedication. She built a respected career as a talented seamstress, earning the trust and admiration of government officials and distinguished members of her community. Through her gifted hands and meticulous craftsmanship, she created not only beautiful garments but also lasting relationships built on excellence and care.
In 1994, Carmen made New Jersey her home, where she continued to share her kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love with those around her. To her family, she was simply “Mama”—the heart of every gathering, a source of comfort, quiet strength, and endless devotion. Her gentle spirit, warm embrace, and selfless love created a legacy that will live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
Carmen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sergio Nikaido, and her cherished son, Carlos Nikaido. Though their loss brought sorrow, she carried their love with her throughout the remainder of her life.
She leaves behind a family who will forever treasure her memory: her loving children, Olga Nikaido, Pilar Nikaido, Flor Smith, Walter Nikaido, and David Rojas; her beloved grandchildren, Eduardo Medina, Beatriz Sanchez, Helen Sanchez, Kenyiro Sanchez, and Kathleen Smith; and her precious great-grandchildren, Anthony Maya Jr., Aiden Medina, Mia Camacho, Alex Maya, Erin-Lynn Camacho, and Andrew Maya. Each of them carries forward a part of her spirit, her love, and the values she instilled throughout generations.
Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find comfort in knowing that her love will remain with us always. Her legacy is one of resilience, compassion, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family. She leaves behind a lifetime of beautiful memories that will continue to inspire and guide all who loved her.
